The project reconfigures and expands the kitchen and dining areas of the home and features a freestanding, copper clad pavilion for outdoor dining. This pavilion is spatially and visually ambitious. Formally it inverts a gable roof, lowering the center of the pavilion and raising its eaves. This operation recalls but transforms the existing hipped roofs between which the pavilion is located. The pavilion is both an optical and daylighting device. From below, the inverted roof produces a dramatic oak ceiling canopy under which a long communal dining table sits. High clerestory windows to the east and west offer views over the adjacent volumes and natural ventilation of the semi-enclosed space. The pavilion’s hipped surface features a north facing, sloped skylight that draws daylight more deeply into the house. From above, the inverted roof allows sightlines over the pavilion framing the landscape and under it, to the dining room downstairs. The pavilion is the central feature of the rear façade of the house and the central space of the home. By inserting a periscope between the existing and the new portions of the house, this project incorporates an expansive view of an adjacent hillside into a house situated in a decidedly flat location in Eagle Rock. This optical device reflects glimpses of the landscape along with the subtly changing hues of the Los Angeles sky into the master bedroom, adding an ever-changing atmosphere to the space. In doing so, a new asset is added to a property that is otherwise declined the luxury, and economic benefit, of a view. A sectional transition between the existing raised floor and the slab-on-grade addition separates the sunken master bedroom from the raised common space yard and invites movement between the kitchen, patio, backyard, and guest house while providing a discreet separation of private and communal zones. Designed for The Standard Plan Program, a Mayor’s office initiative, the proposals are prototypical and adaptable. These preapproved designs incrementally increase housing supply while carefully addressing the zoning, spatial and social constraints of the single family lot and its subsequent forms of existing urban fabric. The one-story proposal imagines the new dwellings as an occupiable rear yard wall that expands on regular intervals, both defining exterior patio and directing views laterally and away from the backyard. In conversation with the early work of Frank Gehry, the project arrays and stacks primitive volumes including a large light gathering lantern that rotates to gather daylight from above the typically fenced perimeter. The two story proposal expands on this approach, leaving gaps in a taller pile of volumes that become private patios. The two-story proposal intensifies the habitability of the detached garage, borrowing its typical footprint and expanding laterally along the rear yard. geometric material of the surrounding site. Rather than understanding the views as a way to release the interior to the exterior, the surrounding geometric and topographic features are drawn into the interior to condition its atmosphere. Artificial and natural geometries are characterized as of the same fluid medium, and the house is a vortex into which this material is drawn. of Southern California’s midcentury ranch to construct a dynamic spatial environment of pitched roof surfaces. Four planes, sloped in opposite directions, are seamed together to modulate programmatic volumes and site relationships. These volumes compress in plan to draw exterior space into the center of the addition and reduce the scale of project from the adjacent street and yard. This addition to an existing 1902 farmhouse in upstate New York provides an entertaining, cooking and loft space for the owners – a lawyer, violinist and poet and a music entrepreneur, tennis player and gourmet cook. Formally, the space is derived from the Dutch, Bank and Corn Crib barn typologies. The regular, extruded massing of the Corn Crib barn, with its short eaves, planar gable ends, minimalist and monolithic form serve as the basis for the proposal. From the Dutch barn, the Southwest corner is ‘cut’ at the first-floor stair landing to address the main entry sequence. Like the Bank barn, the project sits on a sloping site, which informs an irregular aperture strategy based on framed views.&nbsp; The new volume is connected to and separated from the existing house by a glass corridor. Passing through the corridor signals the progression of building from historic to new while capturing the wooded beauty of the Catskill region. 23:49:49 +0000 murmur https://murmur-la.com/Vessels Vessels This research project explores the intersection of slipcasting, mold making, and digital fabrication to develop a series of ceramic vessels. The forms are generated with precise control of the top and bottom profiles of each vessel. Scale, shape and location are modulated to develop a series of sets that uncover subtle shifts in these geometric parameters. The resulting sets are sometimes displayed adjacently and sometimes stacked distributing their profiles vertically as a tall and slender totem.&nbsp; With the widespread availability of numerically controlled manufacture, design at all scales increasingly relies on countless, mass customized parts. These parts often respond to digital parameters more readily than to material parameters. Design is therefore increasingly responsive to technology rather than tradition. The following design research project attempts to combine tradition and technology in order to study the problem of seriality. The project combines craft traditions with digital techniques to explore a plasticity of parts and their impact on the conventions of material assembly or the making of larger wholes. Despite the promise of rapid prototyping technologies, casting continues to produce three-dimensional copies (or seriality) more quickly, economically, and durably than rapid prototyping.&nbsp; Mold making and casting play a key role in the production of repeated objects. Beyond the known advantages of serial production such as the interchangeability of standardized parts and the durability of continuous surfaces, the design problem of tooling has received little academic attention. Tooling refers to the molds used to produce copies of components or objects. Inspired by the hypostyle hall, En Pointe is a group of columns poised on blade-like fulcrums defining dynamic spaces below. To achieve a balanced state, the mass and silhouette of each column are eccentrically distributed to stabilize its adjacent columns. While unstable individually, the columns enter a state of poise when grouped. Rather coding is deployed to distribute geometry, optimize material or shape, or negotiate parameter sets. These operations work on and with objects rather than on the spacing or interval between things. Our drawing considers how coding might produce new forms of visuality and perception seeking to draw without the objectivity of orthographic projection or the monocular vision of the station point camera. This is in response to our interest in exploring the impact of technology on field of view. The inventions of optical devices have long shaped concepts of visuality. This drawing considers how the algorithm constructs forms of visuality. Our code is a simple script that numerically locates two cameras at distinct x, y and z coordinates. The script allows six degrees of freedom in camera positioning. Our objective is to use coding as a GPS device for producing a series of gesture drawings. The gesture drawing is a short duration hand sketch meant to capture objects in motion. The object we view here is an askos, a classical Greek vessel for transporting wine. The form of the askos is bilaterally symmetrical with a distinct front and back, top and bottom. Its form is well suited to reveal the location of a moving subject. Our code composites two views of the askos producing a numerically controlled stereoscopic image. Each camera views half of the object and two scenes are composited in each drawing. The algorithm operates as a device to construct new forms of vision.
