Heather Roberge


About


Heather Roberge AIA is a registered architect and educator based in Los Angeles, California. She is the founder and principal of design practice murmur and a professor in the Department of Architecture and Urban Design at UCLA. She has over twenty five years of professional experience, leading design-focused residential, higher education and commercial projects. Her design process is grounded in research and is concerned with aesthetic and technical performance. Research guides the development of robust, compelling design concepts while performance engages the project’s intended audience and defines the shared ambitions of its team of designers, engineers and craftsmen.  

Ms. Roberge’s academic research and professional work investigate the spatial, structural and atmospheric potential that digital technologies have on the theory and practice of building. Her teaching emphasizes innovative approaches to material, computation, and manufacturing to expand the formal vocabulary and spatial implications of building organization, envelopes and assemblies.

She has received numerous accolades in recognition of her distinctive work including the prestigious 2016 Emerging Voices Award from the Architectural League of New York, a 2015 AIA LA Merit award for En Pointe, an installation for the SCI-Arc Gallery, a 2011 AIA Next LA design merit award for the Succulent House, and was selected as a Finalist in the 2006 MoMA|PS1 Young Architects Program. Her work has been published in A+U, Wallpaper, Architectural Record, Log, Architect, Architects Newspaper, The New York Times, and The Los Angeles Times and exhibited in group shows in the U.S. and abroad.

Ms. Roberge earned her Master of Architecture from the Ohio State University and has previously taught architectural design at Yale University, Washington University in St. Louis, the University of Virginia, the Knowlton School at OSU, Pratt Institute, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

From 1999 to 2006, she was a partner in the design practice, Gnuform. Prior to co-founding Gnuform, Ms. Roberge worked at Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum, Davis Brody Bond, Architecture Research Office, and Eisenman Architects.
