Addition to Brentwood Residence
Los Angeles, California
This addition transforms an existing gabled roof into a continuous folded plane under which a series of new domestic spaces are tucked. The gabled roof is cut and folded to accommodate a split level guest room and writers studio. These new spaces emerge from the existing house and are oriented to the surrounding rugged mountainous landscape. This is possible because the gabled roof is redefined as a sheet rather than a pyramidal volume allowing living to be distributed under it in distinct ways. Lastly, this topological approach to the roof minimizes the bulk of the addition when viewed from the front and rear yards.
