Flight of the Navigator
Linda Fu, Craig Hoverman, Eric Leishman, Justin WilliamsFlight of the Navigator combines a number of creative approaches to the building panel resulting in a comprehensive and innovative proposal. Inspired by thermoformed airplane wing tips, the designers developed a folded panel featuring two outside faces and two interior faces. These saddle shaped panels overlap adjacent panels allowing a single point connection to attach each panel to the wall beyond. Each panel is trimmed after forming with a scripted tool path. This post-forming process results in panels with variable tile boundaries and unique openings to their colored interiors. From a distance, the proposed panel array creates a graphic pattern. At close range, the array presents an envelope that is ambiguously deep and layered.
